As a matter of fact, I have a huge belly scar, but I avoid LAX. I prefer to fly to John Wayne Airport (and sit at the feet of the Duke's statue (and recite the second amendment)). More Disney, Less seepage.

hi dafna,
Yes. I recommended this book to Richard. It is a lovely piece of writing. Marilynne Robinson crafts an image as clear and evocative as any superior writer can. The book is very much about God and in the narrator's case, about much more: his father and grandfather, a broken relationship, male friendship, and love. The book is more a statement for religion than for Christianity in particular although Marilynne Robinson is deeply Christian.
My beef with the book concerns the narrator. The plot line of the book is unlike most in that there is no moving plot. The story unfolds in uncharacteristic ways which for some readers, can be a distraction.
While I loved the imagery, I never quite believed the narrator.

But hey, it won the Pulitzer!

is this the book you recommended to richard?

i give my designer tramp stamp to the cover design...that is if it is about Christianity. the cross is subtle, but loud and clear...tells you before the subject before you know what the book is about.

Christopher,
My real concern with Reverend John Ames is that at times his voice becomes Robinson's in matters of religion. When the narrator loses his voice and becomes the voice of the writer--feminine or pedantic--I begin to fade from the story. This is what happened to me.

You must have been that handsome guy in business suit with polished shoes sitting across from me. Our eyes met. You were reading the Economist. I wanted to say that I know the West Coast correspondent and have you say, "I do too!!" OMG, are you Mr. Crotchety??
Or were you the soft-spoken fella with the hush puppies on?

I haven't read Andreas Kluth's book yet...my reading load is huge this quarter. When I do, I will be sure to call the Pulitzer committee and nominate Mr. Kluth. Will you second the motion?

As to the answer to your question, I have no idea but would be interested in your answer.
